Black Stars manager Avram Grant will today name players that will represent Ghana at Gabon for AFCON 2017. Media Speculations suggest Russian’s FC Anzhi Makhachkala’s defender Jonathan Mensah will miss out of Grant’s team.

The 26-year-old 6 ft 2 inch defender has been part of the national team since 2009 and has since represented the nation 36 times. Jonathan’s performances during this competition earned him a call-up to the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa.

The former Ashanti Gold defender has struggled to find game time in his club, missing the club’s last 4 games on a row. He has missed 8 league games this term out of a possible 17, twice due to a muscle injury, being unused once and not making the squad on 5 occasions.

Mensah has played a total of 11 games {9 Premier Liga and 2 Russian Cup}, 780 minutes on the field, 2 yellow cards seen.

Jonathan boast of a great experience and has been consistent over the years with the national team but has been inconsistent at club level this year. Rumors suggest, the player can’t be in Gabon due to a hidden injury.

With his absence the Black Stars will have new faces in defense, especially in central defense where Daniel Amartey is said to partner John Boye.

The Black Stars will leave for UAE to continue their preparation for the tournament Ghana last won 35 years ago.
